Aristoteles Workshop 2017

Aristoteles Workshop 2017 at the starting line

The documentary workshop, at its 12th edition this year, has begun on Monday, July 3rd, in Bata village of Arad county. Arrived from all around the world, the 12 participants of Aristoteles Workshop met with French expert Thierry Garrel, the former director of the documentary department of Arte France with over 40 years of experience in the industry.

‘We are at the beginning of a new era in documentary film, and you have the perfect age to live fully this moment’, told Thierry Garrel to the young filmmakers. He also pointed out this year’s edition is special due to the fact that the participants come from very different cultural backgrounds. This will prove, in spite of the possible communication barriers, the existence of a common language in cinema, and the diversity will highlight the creativity.

By August 5th, the 12 participants from Croatia, France, Iran, Israel, UK, Netherlands, Romania, Serbia, Turkey, Hungary and Vietnam will go through all the stages of documentary filmmaking. During the first week, they will be joined by Thierry Garrel for the theoretical part and they will explore the area in search of topics. Another four weeks of actual practice will follow, in which the four teams consisting of a director, a cinematographer and an editor will go through every step of the process – from finding a plot, to shooting and post-production – under the guidance of tutors Nino Kirtadze (Georgia/ France) and John Appel (Netherlands).

‘Make the mistakes you’ve never afforded to make before. This will lead you to another level’, the producer Dan Nuțu advised the 12 participants.

At the end, the projects created during the workshop will be presented to a jury of international proffessionals at Arta Cinema in Arad, and the best documentary will be awarded with a 1500€ prize.

Aristoteles Workshop was created in 2007 by the producers Dan Nuțu and Cristina Hoffman, with the support of Arte, the French-German television. This year’s edition was organized with the support of AFCN ( The National Cultural Fund Administration), CNC (The National Centre of Cinema), UCIN ( The Romanian Filmmakers Union), DACIN SARA and the private sponsors Farmexim and the Law Office Țuca Zbârcea & Associates. The 12th edition of Aristoteles Workshop is also supported by the County Council of Arad, the City Hall of Arad and the mayor Gheorghe Falcă, the City Hall of Șiria and the Association ‘Șiria Citadel’.
